My 2011 Game Plan

You’ll notice that I didn’t use the term resolution on this post.  That’s because the moment I say I’m making a resolution to do something it’s a sure bet that I’ll be breaking it shortly thereafter.  Hence I went with game plan instead.  I’d do a year in review but, I kind of ended up doing more guest stuff than stuff for my actual blog.  LOL!  What can I say?  I like giving a helping hand.  These may have not been highlights for my blog but, they were highlights nonetheless.  Here are a few:

  • I was picked to be a contributor over at Bite Club.  I get to be the official True Blood correspondent and help out with the occasional review.  (Thanks Anna!)
  • I got to participate in a couple of guest posts about True Blood and Birthday Memories over at Yummy Men & Kick Ass Chicks.  (Thanks Julie!)
  • Got myself a Kindle 3 and joined the e-book revolution.
  • Met some awesome people both online and in person and I’m totally grateful for it.  (I’m lookin’ at you Jen!)

So after some careful thought and consideration, here’s my game plan for this here blog for 2011:

2011 will be Deemed ‘The Year I Catch Up with My TBR Piles

I hear the voice of Susan Powter yelling at me to, ‘STOP THE INSANITY’ and damn it it’s about time I listen.  I can’t keep doing this to myself, my wallet and my poor shelves.  Day in and day out I have to deal with the sad, puppy dog looks and/or glares from my books who have sat on the shelves longer than they deserve to.  This will probably mean that I won’t be able to get to too many new releases this year but, it’s just a sacrifice I’ll have to make.

Just Saying No to Reading Challenges!

As you can see by clicking on the Challenge tab, 2010 was a total EPIC FAILURE when it came to completing reading challenges.  Taking on more than you can chew + not being able to say NO = Big trouble in little China.  Maybe saying no to ALL reading challenges is a bit of an exaggeration on my part.  I’m going to limit myself to one and it’ll more than likely be a read 100 books in a year type deal.  I’m going to keep it simple.  I think it’s a good motto for 2011, don’t you?

Blog Redesign

Although I’m a fan of the minimal look, my design is just too, um, minimal.  Let’s face it, I need a bit of an overhaul not to mention that the info in my side bars and menu needs some serious updating.  So if any of you know of someone that does redesigns or have worked with someone on your own blogs, please feel free to leave a recommendation.

Master My Planning Ahead & Time Management Skills

It’s no secret that a blogger’s worst enemies are bad time management and lack of planning.  It’s time to grab this bull by the horns.  I’ve bought a planner, a notebook and have updated my Outlook calendar.  I’m armed to the teeth and ready to get my time management/planning ahead skills on.  Be afraid.  Be VERY afraid.  *looks around*  Anyone see my pen?  LOL!  My first step will be to create a blog schedule.  My second step will be to stick with it.

Produce More Book Reviews/Recommendations

This is a big one.  I can’t convince people to try the books I’m loving if I don’t throw up some kind of review/recommendation.  I’m not trying to go all crazy with it.  If I’ve learned anything this year it’s that I need to take baby steps.  Slow and steady wins the race.  So I’ll probably aim for 1 to 2 reviews/recommendations a week.

Produce More Original Content

I think one of the keys to some of my favorite blogs is their original content.  Sure book reviews are nice but, they’re not the end all be all of a book blog.  I will be brainstorming over the next week to come up with interesting weekly or bi-weekly content to keep ya’ll entertained and coming back for more.  This includes but, is not limited to, some of my interests other than books and side projects with some of the awesome people I’ve met over the last year.

Be More Active on Good Reads and Twitter

The only thing more neglected than my blog is my Goodreads account.  Yes, I know, it’s a terrible habit but, I’m going to make a serious effort to keep it up to date.  Also, if you follow me on Twitter you know that I tend to disappear for a few days at a time.  I have hermit tendencies and end up shunning all electronics for a few days.  I know, it’s weird.  It’s just one of those quirks I have so I’ll be making an effort to not spend so many days in my proverbial cave.

I wanted to thank you guys for continuing to visit my blog even though its posts were highly sporadic this year.  I’ve deemed 2010 a rebuilding year and am now moving on.  Winking smile  Hey, it works for football teams.  A big thank you is also going out to those who’ve asked me to contribute on their blogs throughout the year.  It means a lot to me that you guys would have some faith in me even though I didn’t have much of a body of work to show.

Wishing you and your families the very best for 2011.  Until then, I’m leaving you with this very funny poster I found over at Incidental Comics.

Reading Meme Wrap Up

So I’ve learned a few things from doing this reading meme, the first being that under no circumstances should I ever attempt a 30 day reading meme in December.  What the hell was I thinking?  How could I forget how hectic the holiday season is?  Nevermind the holiday season, how did I forget that December has 31 friggin’ days.  *sigh*  The next thing I learned is that my planning ahead skills suck.  I’ve made a mental note to try to fix that during 2011.  The final thing I learned is that participating in a meme wasn’t as bad as I was anticipating.  Anywho, I’m giving you the answers to the questions I missed along with today’s answer in one shot (an idea I’m shamelessly stealing from Jen over at My Book Addiction).  Before I get to the answers I wanted to thank everyone who stopped by to read my back and forth convos with the reading meme and everyone who decided to participate.  YOU GUYS ROCK!!  Without further ado here are the rest of the questions I have left to answer.

Best Quote (Day Twenty-Four)

Okay so I decided to turn this question into the best quotes from the few book reviews I’ve done or am working on.  Here they are:

Then he did smile, one of his dazzling smiles that restored sight to the blind and instilled music in the deaf.
-Not Quite a Husband by Sherry Thomas

I go over to the stroller, which is one of those complicated Swedish affairs with everything from a wind guard to a cappuccino maker, and twist my head inside.
-Catch of the Day by Kristan Higgins

Jazz swirled through the room, competed with my heartbeat and pressed against my skin, sensuous as a lover’s kiss, steamy as the bayou in mid-August.  It stole my soul.
-Afterlife by Merrie Destefano

My body was melting like liquid silver, like the Wicked Witch of the West, like the second Terminator dissembling.
-Night Myst by Yasmine Galenorn

A Book You Plan on Reading (Day Twenty-Five)

There’s no way I can name just one book.  I can however list a few of the series that I plan to start or catch up on.  They are:

Downside Ghosts series by Stacia Kane
unholyghosts  unholymagic  cityofghosts

The Jane True series by Nicole Peeler (Need to read books 2 & 3)
TempestRising  TrackingtheTempest  TempestLegacy

The Disillusionist series by Carolyn Crane
mindgames  doublecross

The Maker’s Song series by Adrian Phoenix (Need to read books 2 & 3.  Book 4 hits stores on February 22, 2011)
RushOfWings  intheblood  Beneatheskinetchedinbone

As I’m sure you’ve figured this is but a mere chip off the ol’ TBR iceberg.  *shrugs*

OMG WTF Plot (Day Twenty-Six)

I wonder if this means OMG WTF as in absolutely absurd or OMG WTF I didn’t see that coming.  Hmm…I’ll go with the absolutely absurd one.  This honor goes to:

colters woman

All I have to say is O_o …

Favorite Non-Mainstream Writer (Day Twenty-Seven)

I think this constitutes most of the Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance authors I read, right?  Or am I talking crazy…again?

First Book Obsession (Day Twenty-Eight)

Good ol’ Nancy Drew was the first book obsession I can remember.

Current Book Obsession (Day Twenty-Nine)

At this very moment it would be a little thing called the Fever series.  I’m halfway through chapter 4 in Dreamfever and my brain friggin’ melted.  If you haven’t read this series yet I need you to stop reading and go get book 1 - Darkfever.  Not tomorrow, not next week, RIGHT NOW!

shadowfeverIs it January 18th yet?  No!  Are you sure?

Saddest Character Death (Day Thirty)

No character’s death as affected me as much as the death of Kisten from Kim Harrison’s Hollows series.  I still haven’t gotten over it and frankly I might never get over it.  WHY KIM WWWWHHHHYYYYY?!?!?  *throws self to knees and throws arms up in the air*  Yes, I know that was a bit dramatic but, damn it it’s how I feel on the inside.

Reading Meme - Day Twenty-Three

Most annoying character

Although I really enjoyed this book, the main character kind of grated on my nerves.  That character is:

Mary from

Oh Mary sweet Mary you drove me bat shit crazy sometimes.  Thankfully it wasn’t enough to prevent me from reading this ridiculously good story.

What are some of the most annoying characters you guys have had to endure?

Reading Meme - Day Twenty-One & Twenty-Two

Favorite fictional romantic relationship (Day Twenty-One)

Hmm….I think I’m going to go with:

I’m sure you figured they’re one of many favorite romantic relationships.  What?  Don’t look so shocked guys.  It’s not always about fight scenes and end of the world scenarios.  I have been known to read contemporary romances every now and again.  Besides what’s not to like about a girl who has the tendency to stick her foot in her mouth and a silent, broody lobsterman?

Shout out to Jen over at My Book Addiction for bringing this book to my attention.  It led to our Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is Challenge.  Thanks Jen.  By the way, I’m still waiting for a rematch.  Winking smile

Who are some of your favorite couples?

Favorite ending/climax (Day Twenty-Two)

Like the question above, this one has several possible answers but, I think I’ll stick to a recent read and go with:

Not only did it have an intense climax but, I thought it had a really good ending.  A tad bittersweet one but, good nonetheless.

What are some of your favorite endings/climaxes?  *snort*

Reading Meme - Day Twenty

Favorite kiss or love scene

Looks like I'll be referring you to Kim Harrison's Hollows series for this one....again.  *grin*  It's one of those scenes that has been burned into my memory and I know that every time I think about this series this will inevitably be one of the top 10 things I remember.  I don't remember which book it's in but it's the scene where Rachel is on her way to open up a can of whoop ass on Piscary.  She's in an elevator with Kisten and before you know it...BAM...they're having one hell of a make out session.  *sigh*  I can't remember if he'd kissed her before then but, I think this was the first time she responds to him with something other than dislike.  The closest picture I could find to match what I envision in my head is this:

Reading Meme - Day Nineteen

Best ensemble of characters in a book
I’m going to have to give this honor to Kim Harrison’s Hollows crew.  The Three Musketeers ain’t got nothin’ on Rachel, Ivy and Jenks.  This merry band of misfits fight constantly but, are fiercely loyal to one another.  Here’s some fan art I found floating around the web:

Reading Meme Day Sixteen, Seventeen & Eighteen

Once again I have fallen behind on the reading meme.  *sigh*  It doesn’t matter how many times you fall as long as you get back up, right?  Let’s see if I can’t get back on track.

Your guilty pleasure book (Day Sixteen)

I’m going to break the rules a little…again…and list a guilty pleasure series.

rrs 1  rrs 2  rrs 3rrs 4  rrs 5  rrs 6rrs 6.5  rrs 7  rrs 8rrs 9.5  rrs 9  rrs 10

Oh Ms. Lorelei James what can I say other than I’m totally hooked on your Rough Riders series.  I consider these guilty pleasures because these delicious cowboys do very, very naughty things to their cowgirls and/or cowboys.  Thank the heavens for my Kindle 3 because I couldn’t getaway with reading the books without the covers raising a few eyebrows.  As it is I have to hide out while reading the e-books because my face starts to turn red and I get all flustered.  If cowboys and hot smexin’ is your thing I highly recommend this series.  It’s important to mention that I blame Fiction Vixen for bringing these to my attention.

What books are your guilty pleasures?

Favorite trilogy or tetralogy (Day Seventeen)

Okay so here’s the thing.  Almost all of the series I read have more than 3 or 4 books.  So I’m going to highlight a series that I’m currently reading that has grabbed me by the shirt collar and refuses to let go.

darkfever  bloodfever  faefeverdreamfever  shadowfever

Before I start gushing I have a confession to make.  I had a difficult time getting into the first 2/3 of Darkfever because I had a hard time relating to Mac.  *ducks behind computer*  So I took to the Twitter airwaves and after getting a little push from @smexybooks, @fictionvxn, @JulieYMandKAC and @harleyquinn0887 I stuck with it and now I can’t read the darn books fast enough.  KMM does an amazing job of giving you just enough to keep you coming back for more.  For those of you who are re-reading the series or need a place to get stuff off your chest, Smexy Books and Fiction Vixen have been having discussions about the books.  Discussions for Darkfever and Bloodfever can be found here and here.  The discussion for Faefever is scheduled for Monday, December 20th over at Fiction Vixen.  I’d like to thank Julie over at Yummy Men & Kick Ass Chicks for threatening to beat me up encouraging me to read this series.

What are some of your favorite series?

Favorite book cover (Day Eighteen)

Oh reading meme there you go again with the picking a favorite thing.  OBVIOUSLY picking one book cover is going to be impossible.  So I’m posting a few that caught my eye this year.

afterlight  afterthegoldenage  demon songGods-War-Cover  night veil  those who fight monsters

What are some of your favorite books covers?
