A generous helping of nosy local gossips
A dollop of envy at married sister’s perfect life
A splash of divine intervention (my matchmaking priest)

Combine ingredients with on adorable puppy, add a strong but silent lobsterman with a hidden heart of gold…and watch the sparks fly.

Let me fill you in on the back story of why I ended up reading this book.  Jen over at My Book Addiction posted a review about a month back and although I love Jen’s reviews she said something about the main character that kind of irked me.  I believe it was:

“Maggie is quickly becoming a desperate woman. She's in her early thirties and unmarried while her identical twin is married to a kind, handsome doctor and has a daughter.”

I tend to dislike authors who create characters who just turn 30, or are in their early 30’s, and go into hyper drive in search of wedded bliss, a white picket fence and the pitter patter of little feet because of their age.  I made a comment on her post saying something to that effect and she defended the book by saying that there was more to it than that.  So although I didn’t like that aspect of the review I did like several others *cough* mysterious lobsterman *cough* so I decided to give it a try.  I couldn’t find the book in my local library but I did find it on PaperBack Swap so I asked Jen if she thought the book was good enough to buy.  She said, and I quote:

“If you get the book and just hate it I will give you a point.  If I'm going to write reviews I better be able to put my money where my mouth is, right?”

To which I said:

“I’m always up for a friendly challenge. You're on. And if I end up liking it as much as you did then I'll give you the credit.”

Hence the Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is Challenge post was born.  Okay so now that that’s out of the way let me move on to the actual review because I know Jen’s sitting on pins and needles shaking her fist at me waiting to hear who gets bragging rights.  ;-)

Ladies and gents I’d like to declare Jen the winner of this round.  This book was filled with highs (Maggie standing up for herself, running a successful diner, and finding love) and lows (being the constant butt of many jokes, losing Colonel, and her inappropriate crush).  I thoroughly enjoyed the emotional rollercoaster and ended up loving Maggie.  The poor girl sticks her foot in her mouth probably every chance she gets and the outcome is more often than not friggin’ hilarious.  And what can I say about Malone, the man is the strong, silent, sexy lumberjack (or lobsterman) type and is the perfect ying to Maggie’s yang.  I saw reflections of myself and certain members of my family in Kristin’s characters which endeared me to this book (no names of course lest I want to be tarred and feathered by my relatives).   What more can I say other than I laughed, I cried and I didn’t want it to end.  Jen thanks for laying down the gauntlet.  This was a fun experience I hope to go toe to toe with you again soon.  Only this time I’d like to be the one doing the victory lap.

Favorite Lines:
A brogue!  How Liam Neeson!  How Colin Farrell!  How Bono!  (Pg. 12)

I go over to the stroller, which is one of those complicated Swedish affairs with everything from a wind guard to a cappuccino maker, and twist my head inside.  (Pg. 31)

Any more food, and Roger’s belt will slice him in half.  (Pg. 46)

4/5 stars

Want the Chance to Win Previously Read Books?

Good morning everyone!  I wanted to bring to your attention an idea the lovely Kimberly of Darque Reviews posted about yesterday.  She wants to share some book love with her readers and wants your opinion about a Previously Read Book Giveaway she's thinking of starting.  If you're interested in receiving some book love, please click on the link below and let her know how you feel.

Movie Review: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Meet charming and jobless Scott Pilgrim.  A bass guitarist for garage band Sex Bob-omb, the 22-year-old has just met the girl of his dreams...literally.  The only catch to winning Ramona Flowers?  Her seven evil exes are coming to kill him.  Genre-smashing filmmaker Edgar Wright tells the amazing story of one romantic slacker's quest to power up with love in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

Scott Pilgrim has never had a problem getting a girlfriend.  It's getting rid of them that proves difficult.  From the girl who kicked his heart's ass—and now is back in town—to the teenage distraction he's trying to shake when Ramona rollerblades into his world, love hasn't been easy.  He soon discovers, however, his new crush has the most unusual baggage of all: a nefarious league of exes controls her love life and will do whatever it takes to eliminate him as a suitor.

As Scott gets closer to Ramona, he must face an increasingly vicious rogues' gallery from her past—from infamous skateboarders to vegan rock stars and fearsome identical twins.  And if he hopes to win his true love, he must vanquish them all before it really is game over.

I’ll start with a confession.  I haven’t read the graphic novels this movie is based on.  I wouldn’t even know what the cover for the graphic novels look like because I’ve never seen them.  And honestly, even if this movie has absolutely nothing to do with the graphic novels I would still completely love it.  Granted I’m a wee bit bias because A) I love Michael Cera and B) I love anything video game, anime and/or comic book related.

This movie had it all.  There were great fight scenes, really good acting (um, Kieran Culkin, Anna Kendrick, Jason Schwartzman and did I mention Michael Cera?) awesome visuals, copious amounts of video game related references and hilarious one liners.  If all those things are up your alley, or you’re just a big Michael Cera fan girl like me, then I strongly recommend you check out this movie.  You won’t regret it.  And if you do, you can always come back and vent about how crazy I am for liking this flick.
Okay seriously, stop reading and go watch it!

Time is on their side and they can be together, assuming the truth doesn't ruin everything first.

Immortals born in the thirteenth century, Lucien Riordan and Ranulf Styr have waited centuries to be reunited with their love. Want for her cemented their friendship through time even as it tore it apart. She changed their lives, made them want better, and they plan to show her that. There’s only one catch—she’s never met them before.

Eris Brue is flattered by Lucien and Ranulf’s attention but they are her bosses. She doesn’t want to get tangled up in an office romance, especially not with two men. Their joint seduction overcomes her resolve and she gives in even though she knows they are keeping secrets that could doom their relationship.

Centuries of planning have finally come to fruition. Lucien and Ranulf have a short amount of time to make Eris love them, because once time has her, everything could come to an end.
