Movie Review: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Meet charming and jobless Scott Pilgrim.  A bass guitarist for garage band Sex Bob-omb, the 22-year-old has just met the girl of his dreams...literally.  The only catch to winning Ramona Flowers?  Her seven evil exes are coming to kill him.  Genre-smashing filmmaker Edgar Wright tells the amazing story of one romantic slacker's quest to power up with love in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

Scott Pilgrim has never had a problem getting a girlfriend.  It's getting rid of them that proves difficult.  From the girl who kicked his heart's ass—and now is back in town—to the teenage distraction he's trying to shake when Ramona rollerblades into his world, love hasn't been easy.  He soon discovers, however, his new crush has the most unusual baggage of all: a nefarious league of exes controls her love life and will do whatever it takes to eliminate him as a suitor.

As Scott gets closer to Ramona, he must face an increasingly vicious rogues' gallery from her past—from infamous skateboarders to vegan rock stars and fearsome identical twins.  And if he hopes to win his true love, he must vanquish them all before it really is game over.

I’ll start with a confession.  I haven’t read the graphic novels this movie is based on.  I wouldn’t even know what the cover for the graphic novels look like because I’ve never seen them.  And honestly, even if this movie has absolutely nothing to do with the graphic novels I would still completely love it.  Granted I’m a wee bit bias because A) I love Michael Cera and B) I love anything video game, anime and/or comic book related.

This movie had it all.  There were great fight scenes, really good acting (um, Kieran Culkin, Anna Kendrick, Jason Schwartzman and did I mention Michael Cera?) awesome visuals, copious amounts of video game related references and hilarious one liners.  If all those things are up your alley, or you’re just a big Michael Cera fan girl like me, then I strongly recommend you check out this movie.  You won’t regret it.  And if you do, you can always come back and vent about how crazy I am for liking this flick.
Okay seriously, stop reading and go watch it!

  1. Hey Jen!

Thanks for this review - I was curious about this movie. I recently bought the first volume in this series since it sounded kinda cool and also 'cause I love Edgar Wright movies. Jason Schwartzman and Chris Evans too :)

  2. Hi Jen! Feels like I haven't 'talked' to you in forever. Thanks for stopping by.

You're very welcome. I knew I had to pay some sort of homage to it after me and my boyfriend couldn't stop talking about it on the way home.

BTW...finished Catch of the Day. I'll send you a link to the review once I post it up. You may or may not be pleasantly surprised. And yes, I'm being vague on purpose. ;)

  3. It does feel like it's been too long, doesn't it?

Just so you know - I'm fully prepared for you to hate it :) I made sure I've got plenty of points on PBS too. LOL

  4. Great review Jen! My favorite movie this year.

  5. LOL! Oh ye of little faith....
