Reading Meme - Day Four

Your favorite book ever

"Once there was a tree ... and she loved a little boy."

So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein.

Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk ... and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave.

This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein has created a moving parable for readers of all ages that offers an affecting interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return.

I still cry every time I read this book.  It’s one of the stories that have stuck with me as the years have flown by.  The day I have kids it’ll probably be one of the first book I buy for their library.

How about you guys?  What’s your favorite book ever?

  1. It's funny that this is your favorite book ever. My daughter received this for her birthday a couple of years ago and I had never read it. After I read it, my initial sentiment was "what the f*ck is this?" lol It's grown on me since though.
I am liking these posts Jen...but I can see how lots of thought is involved!

  2. Hey Jen! Oh gosh, there are so many books to choose from. One pick would definitely be "My teacher is an alien." That's a super fun read for any 4th or 5th grade kid. Other than that, I'm a huge Dr. Seuss, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Curious George fan!

  3. @Julie: LMAO! From what I hear you either love it or completely hate it. Thanks Julie. I'm definitely forced to think on some of these. ;)

@Zee: I'm a huge Seuss fan too. Once my little sisters are past the 'coloring anything with paper in it' phase I wanted to start them on some Suess.

    Thanks for stopping by ladies!
