Dead in the Family Discussion (Sookie Stackhouse #10)

deadinthefamily

*SPOILER ALERT*
IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THIS BOOK OR THE PREVIOUS BOOKS IN THE SERIES, PLEASE DO NOT CONTINUE READING THIS POST!

Well folks we’ve finally made it to the discussion to book 10.  It seems like only yesterday that me and D decided to embark on this crazy re-read journey.  This also means we’re T minus 2 days from the release of Dead Reckoning!  Don’t forget to stop by and enter my or D’s giveaway for book 11!  Contest closes tonight.

If you were unable to re-read the book but, would still like to participate in the discussion, you can go HERE to get a quick Wikipedia refresher.  Here’s a few questions and/or points to get the discussion ball rolling…

Discussion Questions:

  1. Were you guys surprised by Amelia’s departure?
  2. Sookie’s gone through an enormous amount of crap which has inevitably changed her.  How do you feel about how she’s changed?
  3. Were you sympathetic toward or angered by Eric’s confession about why he was unable to rescue her from Lochlan & Neave?
  4. Do you think the crew will be able to pull off killing Victor?
  5. There were several significant events involving Sookie’s first love, Bill (e.g. escorting him to see Caroline, finding his sister, finding out how he was made).  Did any of these events change your perception about Bill?
  6. Four words.  Smoking. Hot. Couch. Scene.  Thoughts?
  7. What did you guys think about Hunter’s visit?
  8. Eric revealing inner vamp workings - Info dump or Eric’s way of showing Sookie she’s important to him?
  9. How about that crazy ass Appius Livius Ocella and his psychotic child Alexei Romanov?
  10. In true Charlaine Harris fashion, we got one hell of a final fight scene.  Too much?  Too little?  Not enough?

Favorite Quotes:

“While you were with Neave and Lochlan, I suffered with you,” he said, meeting my eyes directly.  “I hurt with you.  I bled with you—not only because we’re bonded, but because of the love I have for you.”
-Eric to Sookie

“I love you,” he said.  “Nothing you do or say will change that.  If you asked me to bury a body for you—or to make a body—I would do it without a qualm.”
-Bill to Sookie

Each time I saw Eric, I felt a little more cheerful.  And finally, I had my very own orgasm, a moment so explosive it was like I’d been saving up for a holiday.
-Sookie

“Pam.  Listen.”
“The phone is pressed to my ear.  Speak.”
“Appius Livius Ocella just dropped in.”
“Fuck a zombie!”
-Call between Pam and Sookie

This was “hug Sookie” season, and no one had told me ahead of time.
-Sookie

  1. 1) I wasn't all that surprised actually. I knew it wasn't permanent. Also after everything that happened with Trey's death and all, I would want to leave the city too.

  2. 2) I don't think she has changed that much. I mean I wouldn't blame her for going crazy or anything given all she has been through. But I think it is more than that. I think she is now just accepting how things work. I think she is emotionally and physically drained :(

  3. 3) I was sympathetic actually. It wasn't like he sat there and didn't care. He got the chance to call Niall before he was chained up in silver for goodness sakes. If he hadn't, she wouldn't be alive. I don't think Sookie should get so angry towards him when he literally couldn't move. It is unfair.

  4. 4) Actually i do think they can. They just need to think everything out. He obviously isn't someone you just rush in a kill, it needs to be planned where he is concerned

  5. 5) It lightened me up a bit towards him, but I knew it was just another way to get her back. But I like that he is making an effort to find and show her his "family".

  6. 6) What thought? I was to busy drooling at that scene. Imagining Eric was just too sexy. Looking at couch now, yup, mouth watering yet again LOL!

  7. 7) The visit was better than I expected. I like that Hunter doesn't rattle. He meets Heidi and knows she is a vampire and he doesn't get scared and the "tall man with hair like a lady that walked in his closet" LOL! I was most shocked with Claude and the way he was with Hunter. He acts like such a douche and around Hunter, he was actually sweet. It was actually very nice :)

  8. 8) I think he is showing Sookie that she is important to him. She is his wife now, so he knows he has to trust her. I really liked that he told her and didn't continue to keep her in the dark.

  9. 9) Honestly, this was part of the reason why I didn't like this book so much. I don't understand there full purpose in this book. Just so Eric can help Alexei? Appius is an idiot. I don't know why you would bring back a child who just witnessed his entire family being slaughtered. Of course he was going to be a psycho. I honestly don't understand what he thought Eric could do.

  10. 10) The ending felt so hashed. I mean they found out who killed Basim very easily through Sookie and then next thing you know someone is dead and then we get Alexei and Appius trying to kill Sookie for no reason and then Colman. WTF? He popped out of nowhere. We finally know who Claudine's baby daddy was and he has a grudge. What the hell?! I mean why blame Sookie? It was just to mashed together for me this time.

  11. I would have liked more from certain parts of the story with this one. I mean I wish they did the thing with Colman like they did with Dermot. Bring him in, he is mean and scary, but it gets to a point where he learns the truth about people and the events. That didn't happen here. He was brought in and done with in a page really. I mean why bring him in like that when he was potential family?

  12. I also would have liked if the storyline about Basim was more focused. I mean it felt almost like an after thought. I don't know, I just feel if there were two things that were really being focused on the book would feel more...concentrated. Maybe it is just me :(

  13. 1) I also wasn't surprised by Amelia's departure. I know not all of us like Amelia, but I really do and I was sad to see her go. It was time for her to come to judgement on her actions with Bob and she needed to get away to heal from Trey's death. Shoot, I needed time away to heal from Trey's death. :-P

  14. 2) I'm guessing you are talking about the very beginning with Sookie's feelings of depression and such. After being tortured and everything else I can understand why she is feeling the way that she does. It just made me very sad for her and I wanted to be there to try to life up her spirits. I mean she couldn't even enjoy making love with Eric no matter what he tried to do. It make me very happy when she started to feel happy again and see that there was really was a future and it wouldn't be filled with sadness.

  15. 3) I was sympathetic towards Eric when he told Sookie why he couldn't come help her. I also was happy that he brought it up instead of Sookie having to try to pull it out of him. I understand why he couldn't make it to her and even though she was a little mad at first I think she understood it too in the end and stopped holding that against him.

  16. 4) I think the whole think with Victor is a great idea and I think the crew can pull it off. They'll just have to really think about things and probably bring in a little more help. They need to sit down and get a plan figured out and make sure to have Plan A, Plan B, Plan C and probably a Plan D cuz we all know that not everything works exactly like you plan it the first time.

  17. 5) My perception of Bill never really changed. I was happy that Sookie went with him to see Caroline and that she was able to connect with more family before she passed. I thought it was awesome how accepting she was of Bill being a vampire and how she actually made it into a funny situation. I respected Sookie for finding Bill's sister and I am happy for him that he was reconnected with her to not only get better but also maybe move on from Sookie. I think it helps understand Bill some knowing what happened to him to be changed...being taken away from his family like that was just sad.

  18. 6) I'm not going to lie, I saw this question and thought "What couch scene?!" Yeah, I know, shoot me now ladies! I literally just finished reading the book and all I could think of was the ending and how crazy and bloody it what. Now that I have thought about it though I remember what you are talking about and it was very yummy! It restated the fact that Eric is very blessed in certain areas of the anatomy and that's just hot. :-P

  19. 7) I think Eric did this for a few reasons. Part of me agrees with Diana thinking that he is letting Sookie into more of his life because she is his wife and he wants her to know these things. Like he loves her and wants to share it with her. But part of me feels like he was doing it because she should know these things to please other vampires since she's his wife. He kept getting annoyed with Sookie when she wasn't completely following what he was saying he never really came out and said, "Lover, I really want you to know these things so you can understand me more and we can be closer." I don't know if I'm making a bit of sense right now. LOL.

  20. 8) Ocella and Alexei just annoyed me. I agree with Diana, I don't understand their role in this book. Charlaine introduced them just to kill them off. I understood that they came because Ocella believed that Alexei being around Eric would keep him calm and keep him from having one of his episodes but really, what was the point? Was it just to show us that Eric isn't always as strong as we think? I think that point was made when Victor entered the scene. Ocella was selfish and Alexei was crazy. For bringing in Alexei who is a well known historical figure in real life there should have been a better reason for him in the book.

  22. 10) Yes Harris did do her normal fashion and place a crap ton of stuff in one final chapter. For one this chapter could have been split into at least 2...one being the were section and the 2nd being Eric and Sookie's houses. That's just my personal opinion though. As for events...I thought parts of them were just weird. Sookie being the Shaumn for the werepack?! A medicine woman? really?! Drinking some crazy liquid that gives her crazy visions and the ability to see auras and know exactly what each of the colors means. Just weird on that part. Then Ocella going nuts and looking for Jason...I didn't know what the heck he had up his sleeve with that. Part of me felt like when he was around Jason he felt calmer and maybe that's why he went searching for him. Then I agree with Diana, Colman played such a small part...he was Claudine's baby daddy and he was only REALLY in the book for a couple of pages. I wish they would have played on this more. I wish that maybe he could have come to terms with what happened and left it at that. It was crazy were meeting followed by tons of killing and blood and then it is done.

  23. I have another bone to pick with the ending...I was so annoyed when Dermont was there and we all know he is under a spell so Sookie explains that in her fairy tales a kiss breaks the spell...and it works?! What the hell. I felt like that was just a rushed way to get the story to come to a close. I mean, this whole time someone just had to lay a big fat kiss on Dermont and he would have stopped? Plus with the shaumn ritual and all the other crazy detail that goes into the books I figured that something besides a kiss would break a fairy spell! Then the end was strange with Sookie going to bed with her Cousin and Great-greatgrandfather and being able to sleep...the end. Just weird! Anyone else feel this way? Or did you like the ending and how simple it was to break the spell?
