No matter how much the paranormal politics of Atlanta change, one thing always remains the same: if there’s trouble, Kate Daniels will be in the middle of it…
As the mate of the Beast Lord, Curran, former mercenary Kate Daniels has more responsibilities than it seems possible to juggle. Not only is she still struggling to keep her investigative business afloat, but she must now deal with the affairs of the Pack, including preparing her people for attack from Roland, a cruel, ancient being with godlike powers. Since Kate’s connection to Roland has started coming out, no one is safe—especially those closest to her.
As Roland’s long shadow looms ever nearer, Kate is called to attend the Conclave, a gathering of the leaders from the various supernatural factions in Atlanta. When one of the Masters of the Dead is found murdered, apparently at the hands of a shapeshifter, Kate is given less than twenty-four hours to hunt down the killer. And this time, if she fails, she’ll find herself embroiled in a war that could destroy everything she holds dear…
I have absolutely no idea how I'm going to be able to review this book without spoilers. And since I don't do spoilers I'll leave you with this:
I kid, I kid. I was serious about the not doing spoilers but, there's no way I can't not gush about this book. So be forewarned. I am biased as hell because I love this series.
Up to this point it's safe to say that I've loved each book I've read pretty much equally. And though I hate to pick favorites, Magic Breaks at this point is my favorite. Each book manages to put Kate and the crew through the wringer and this book is no exception. Just when I think our merry band of psychopaths is about to break they rally and pull through in spectacular fashion. One of the things I love most about this story (and the books in general) is watching everyone grow and come into their own.
I laughed, I almost cried, my blood pressure was raised to ridiculous levels, I broke out into cold sweats and I would go on that emotional rollercoaster again in a heartbeat. So go snatch up a copy and experience all the awesomeness.
I rode out of the stables on top of an eight-foot-tall donkey that looked like she had robbed a Holstein cow and was now wearing the stolen clothes. Robert gaped at me. Desandra made a weird face: her right eyebrow crept up, her left went down, and her mouth got stuck somewhere between surprise and the beginning of the word "what". Derek's mouth opened and didn't close until we came to a halt next to him.
"What the hell is this?" Desandra asked.
"This is Cuddles. She's a mammoth donkey."
Derek grinned, leaning on the fence. "Do you have any self-respect left?"
