Graphic Novel Review: Mercy Thompson: Hopcross Jilly by Patricia Briggs

Title:  Mercy Thompson: Hopcross Jilly
Author(s):  Patricia Briggs / Rik Hoskin
Genre:  Graphic Novel, Urban Fantasy
Publication Date:  June 30, 2015 (hardcover edition)
Series Info:  Book 7.5 in the Mercy Thompson series
Artist(s):  Tom Garcia (illustrator) / Mohan (colorist) / Bill Tortolini (lettering)
Who/What/Why/Where/How:  As you know, I'm a huge fan of Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson series so when NetGalley sent me an e-mail asking if I wanted to 'Read Now' the answer was 'Hell Yes'.
Where to Buy:  Amazon

Mercy Thompson is a shapeshifting coyote and honorary member of the Tri-Cities werewolf pack. When the pack stumbles upon the buried bones of numerous dead children, she shapeshifts into a mystery of the legendary fae - a mystery that draws Mercy's stepdaughter Jesse into the fray!

The supernatural romance series Mercy Thompson continues in this all-new, original story by New York Times bestselling author Patricia Briggs, exclusively created for the comic book medium!

Hopcross Jilly was a fun read and, in my opinion, another great addition to the Mercyverse.  This particular adventure takes place between Frost Burned (book 7) and Night Broken (book 8) and just after the events in Dead Heat (book 4 in the Alpha & Omega series).  If you were to pick up this graphic novel without ever having read the Mercy books you would still be able to follow the story without any major issues.  Here's the gist of what happens:  Mercy, Adam and crew head out for an evening stroll, they find several buried bones, they get involved in the investigation, Jesse (Adam's daughter) ends up getting dragged into the mess, craziness ensues and the problem gets handled.

You guys already know that it's hard for me to be objective with anything that has to do with Patricia Briggs.  It's not a secret that I'm a HUGE fangirl.  That said, there were a couple of things that prevented me from giving this a 5 coffee cup rating.  The first thing was that I figured pretty early on who the villain is.  Not a huge deal but, not as fun as playing the 'Whodunnit?' game in my head while I'm reading.  The second thing was that I felt the story was over way to quickly.  I know, I know I'm a greedy bastard.  I forget it's a graphic novel and that it's kind of par for the course for this particular medium.  Despite that I still enjoyed the story and I definitely recommend giving it a read.

I know, I know. It's a movie about a stoner and his talking teddy bear. And yet I can't say no to that foul mouthed huggable plush toy.

Publication Date:  June 3, 2014
Series Info:  Book 3 in the Reapers Motorcycle Club series

Who/What/Why/Where/How:  Enjoyed the hell out of Reaper's Property and Reaper's Legacy, books 1 and 2 in the series.

Liam “Hunter” Blake hates the Reapers MC. Born and raised a Devil’s Jack, he knows his duty. He’ll defend his club from their oldest enemies—the Reapers—using whatever weapons he can find. But why use force when the Reapers’ president has a daughter who’s alone and vulnerable? Hunter has wanted her from the minute he saw her, and now he has an excuse to take her.

Em has lived her entire life in the shadow of the Reapers. Her overprotective father, Picnic, is the club’s president. The last time she had a boyfriend, Picnic shot him. Now the men in her life are far more interested in keeping her daddy happy than showing her a good time. Then she meets a handsome stranger—a man who isn’t afraid to treat her like a real woman. One who isn’t afraid of her father. His name is Liam, and he’s The One.

Or so she thinks.

I would like to start this review with a letter to Joanna Wylde.

Dear Ms. Wylde,

If I ever get the opportunity to meet you IRL, it's probably going to look like this:

Or perhaps something like this:

I'm obviously Sheldon in this scenario
I enjoyed the hell out of Devil's Game.  Thank you for writing this book.  You. Are. Awesome.

One of your many fans,

So, yeah. I really, really really liked reading Em and Hunter's story.  It's definitely on my top 10 of favorite books I've read this year.  Their story kind of runs concurrent with Ruger's book, Reaper's Legacy.  So I'm going to avoid the plot.  Actually this isn't going to be much of a review.  I'm simply going to tell you to stop reading this and go buy these books.  Unless gritty, erotic, violent MC stories aren't your thing.  Then definitely skip this series.  It's NOT for you.  For those who do, I hope you enjoy the ride. *evil grin*

Favorite Scenes/Lines:

Em's first day of high school.  Reapers style:
"Glad to hear it," Dad replied.  He leaned over and kissed the top of my  head, then spoke so loud his voice practically echoed.  "Enjoy high school, princess.  You let me know if any of these guys give you shit, got?"

I nodded, praying for death.  Something fast, merciful.  Aneurysm?  Yeah, that'd do it.

"Just go," I whispered.

"I'll see you tonight," he replied, then turned and sauntered down the hallway, the colors on his back a grim reminder to everyone who saw us that my dad was president of the Reapers motorcycle club.

Thought Hunter has while watching Em:
She held my gaze for long seconds, taking another slow drag and blowing out a smoke ring.  A fucking smoke ring.  Somewhere in the back of my head, I heard the theme from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly playing.

Liam "Hunter" Blake was about to be shot dead by a cliche.

Em's response to Hunter's MC president:
"I'm Burke," the Devil's Jacks president said, stepping forward.  "You must be Em?"

I smiled and nodded.

"It's very nice to meet you," I said.

"You're not much, for a girl who causes so much trouble," he said bluntly.  "I pictured you with bigger tits."

My smile didn't falter for a minute.

"I'm still saving up for my boob job," I told him politely.  "Until then, I'm afraid Hunter's stuck with me like this.  On the bright side, I give excellent head.  He had to pay my father six whole goats for me, you know."

Hunter choked, but Burke burst out laughing.  Skid's eyes widened, and he gave me a sly nod of approval.

Review: Beyond the Cut by Sarah Castille

Title:  Beyond the Cut
Author:  Sarah Castille
Genre:  Contemporary Romance
Publication Date:  June 2, 2015
Series Info:  Book 2 in the Sinner’s Tribe Motorcycle Club series
Cover Artist:  N/A
Who/What/Why/Where/How:  Read Rough Justice, book 1 in the series, and really enjoyed it.   And honestly, I initially wanted to try this series because of an excerpt I read from this book. *grin*
Where to Buy:  Amazon

As a teen, Dawn ran from a life on the streets straight into the arms of Jimmy “Mad Dog” Sanchez, a biker who promised to be her knight in shining armor. But his love was just another cage. Years later, Dawn’s former life still has its hooks in her and she’ll do whatever it takes to break free. When Cade “Raider” Tyson, a member of a rival club, makes her an offer, Dawn finds herself in a different, hotter kind of trouble with one irresistible Sinner…

Cade is an outlaw biker with allegiance to one thing and one thing only: The Sinner’s Tribe Motorcycle Club. But when it comes to the stunningly sexy, fiercely independent Dawn Delgado, Cade finds himself…hungrier for more. Trouble is on Dawn’s heels and he wants to be the answer to her prayers, whether she wants him to be or not. What can’t be denied is the red-hot attraction between them. However, as they fall deeper, the danger rises and Cade may have to sacrifice it all…?

You guys.  YOU GUYS!  I should've just read the damn series out of order because Beyond the Cut was everything I was hoping it would be.  No offense to Jagger and Arianne from book 1, who were awesome in their own right, but DAYUM!  Cade and Dawn just did it for me.  In. All. The. Ways.  *smirk*  There's just something about a strong and fierce woman who's able to tame a beyond sexy manwhore biker by just being her bad ass self.  Am I right?!

Okay so check it.  Dawn is a survivor.  Homegirl has been through some serious stuff and it has shaped her into a strong and independent woman.  Cade is also a survivor.  He's had to go through his fair share of trauma while growing up which turns him into a rebel who is also a loyal protector.  When these two are in a room together these attributes feed off each other and create some pretty off the charts chemistry.  Dawn is dealing with a major issue because of her ex.  Cade, who can't resist the one woman who's left him before he could leave her, wants Dawn and steps up to help her.  The rest of the story is pretty standard MC fare.  Dawn and Cade try to fight their obvious attraction to each other, Dawn's ex causes some serious problems for her, Cade is torn between Dawn and his duty to the MC, shenanigans and hijinks ensue, shit blows up, people get beat up and/or offed and our couple lives happily ever after.  Albeit with some matching bumps, cuts and bruises.

I also have to say that I love the supporting cast in these books.  We get to see Jagger and Arianne again along with the other Sinner's Tribe MC crew.  We also get to see more of Banks, the owner of the bar that Dawn and Arianne work at.  He's slowly becoming one of my favorite characters in the books.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a Banks book.  *looks over at Sarah Castille*  Anywhoozle, I think it's pretty clear that I'm a fan of the book and that I'm going to tell you that you should pick up a copy.  *grins*  So...yeah...go pick up a copy.

Favorite Scenes/Lines:

Exchange between Cade and Dawn:
"I'm not going to lose you because of him."  Cade cupped her face between his palms.  "Trust me, Dawn.  I won't let anything happen to you.  I love you.  I didn't want to, but I do.  I didn't think it could happen, but it did.  There isn't anything I won't do for you and the girls.  I'll give my life to keep you safe.  Just don't run away.  Give me a chance to make this right."

Banter between Dawn, Arianne and Banks:
"I figured he must have been at the curb, and not in the shadows, which means it wasn't Jimmy because I would have recognized him."

"A mini Colonel Mustard with a pipe in the kitchen."

"Did you just tell a joke, Banks?"  Dawn shared an incredulous glance with Arianne.  "I think Banks just told a joke."

"Write down the date and time.  I think it only happens once every five years."

Review: Rough Justice by Sarah Castille

Genre:  Contemporary Romance
Publication Date:  February 3, 2015
Series Info:  Book 1 in the Sinner’s Tribe Motorcycle Club series
Cover Artist:  N/A
Who/What/Why/Where/How:  Read an exclusive excerpt of Beyond the Cut (book 2 in the series) over at Heroes and Heartbreakers and decided I definitely needed to give this series a try.
Where to Buy:  Amazon

Raised in a motorcycle gang, tough, beautiful Arianne Hunter has always dreamed of a normal life. But no sooner does she escape her father’s domineering grasp than she wakes up to find herself in a rival gang’s clubhouse—at the mercy of the dangerously sexy Jagger Knight.

The alpha leader of the notorious Sinner’s Tribe, Jagger Knight is all muscle, all biker, and all man. But somewhere inside this hard tattooed outlaw, Arianne senses a kindred spirit—and she can’t ignore their tempestuous attraction. Can she beat him at his own game in a revved-up blaze of glory? Or will their passion spark a war that’s the end of the road for them both?
 Add to GoodReads

I have to start this review by giving a shout out to Heroes and Heartbreakers.  I'm not sure I would've picked up this series had it not been for their Beyond the Cut: Exclusive Excerpt post.  Dawn and Cade more than piqued my interest and since your girl can't read a series out of order I decided to 1-click Rough Justice and give it a go.  This was my first Sarah Castille book and I'm happy to report that it definitely won't be my last.

So here's the deal.  I really liked the main characters.  Jagger is a broody, stubborn, authoritative pain in the ass alpha.  He's also protective, loyal, sexy as sin and sweet in his own caveman kind of way.  Arianne is tough, smart, fierce and has a tremendous set of lady balls.  From the second these two meet it's one hell of a game of tug-o-war.  He's used to people doing what he says and she bows to no one.  As you can imagine, we've got some serious sparks flying.  I liked the supporting characters just as much.  Arianne's bestie Dawn was funny and crazy protective of her.  Jagger's crew is a badass motley crew.  There's definitely something for everyone as far as personalities go.  Watching them all interact with one another was amusing at best and scary at worst.

As far as the story goes, there's all kinds of MC shenanigans going on.  Beef with rival crews, less than legal activity and a whole heap of violence.  There's a lot going on aside from the romance between Jagger and Arianne but not so much that it's hard to follow.  I was just as interested in the storyline as I was in finding out how it would end with Jagger and Arianne.  If that sounds like it's right up your valley I suggest giving Rough Justice a try.  However, if you're not into gritty MC storylines and insta-love (although I'd say that's a bit an overstatement IMO) then this might not be for you.

Favorite Scenes/Lines:

Scene between Arianne and her bestie Dawn:
"And to think I wasted time on a man like Eugene."

"Eugene?"  Arianne tried, but failed to keep a straight face.  "Your dating website disaster?  You texted me from the restaurant for an emergency call thirty seconds after you sat down, and I picked you up ten minutes later.  There wasn't much time wasted that evening."

Dawn shuddered.  "That ten minutes felt like ten years.  He brayed when he laughed.  And his lips peeled back.  Did I tell you he had horse teeth?"

"You Instagrammed his teeth, so everyone knew."

"But it was okay."  Dawn had the good grace to blush.  "He wasn't into social media.  He had no friends, so he couldn't be embarrassed, and I didn't use his real name.  Just his teeth."

"That's right."  Laughter bubbled in her chest.  "You nicknamed him 'the Italian Stallion'."

Banter between Arianne and Jagger:
For an instant she didn't move.  Wanting.  Hoping.  Then she swung her leg over the back of his bike.  "If you're lying to me, Jagger, I'll put a knife through your heart."

"Sweetheart, you already did."
